About Me

My photo
Hi, my name is Maren Talcott. I am 22 years old, and I just graduated Washington State University with a degree in Elementary Education and minor in Spanish. My passion is teaching... I love children! I was born in Minnesota, but spent all of my life growing up in Washington. My dream is to become a kindergarten teacher, and inspire children to love learning! I have done little to no traveling in my lifetime outside of the United States. My goal for this blog is to keep my family, friends, and loved ones up to date on my experiences. I will be living in Guatemala for three months, Jan.-March 2014. I will be volunteering at the Opal House School near Lake Atitlan. The reason for traveling to Guatemala is to have the experience of a lifetime, and improve my Spanish! This journey will push me out of my comfort zone, and open my eyes to a whole new world. I know that I will show my love and compassion to the guatemalan people every single day, and hope that I can impact their lives as much as I know they will impact my own. The Children- The Reason I know Everything is Going to be Okay!

Internet connection is so terrible I am ending up posting many posts at the same time! So sorry, but I can only post when I am able to get internet. Today (Day 4) , I met some of the children! Even though school does not start until Jan. 20th, the family I am living with also has religious education classes that they hold twice a week in their chapel. Today twenty four children ages 3-9 were here to pray, be educated, arts & crafts, eat, and play. They were only here three hours, and let me tell you, those three hours just flew by! I was able to go with Will in the Tuk Tuk to pick up all 24 children. The schoolbus was absolutely full. I had one girl on my lap even! Immediately when the students even heard the bus coming, they were jumping up and down, their smiles were from ear to ear, and they looked at me with such curiosity. Who is that gringa (white girl)?! They immediately were touching my hair, complimenting me, hugging me, it was like they knew me for years. It was the most welcoming thing I have ever experienced. The children were infatuated with me. The one girl who was on my lap, ended up being my friend for the whole day, never leaving my side. When we arrived at the chapel, they were racing to hold my hand, sit next to me, and talk to me. I was so overwhelmed because I could not understand them all completely…and they all talked at the same time! We sang songs, and learned about a story from the bible. After going to the school to do a craft project, it was free choice time. Now on this 70 acre farm, there is SO much for the children to do. I mean absolutely everything. I played fuseball with some of the boys. Then I played futbol with a group of the kids. I was smiling and laughing the whole time. It was absolutely perfect. They were so loving, compassionate, and kind. The children just wanted me to love them and give them attention. Those are two things I can easily do whether I know exactly what they are saying or not. Today was the first day when I actually felt like I could do this for three months. I can do this because of the children.
