About Me

My photo
Hi, my name is Maren Talcott. I am 22 years old, and I just graduated Washington State University with a degree in Elementary Education and minor in Spanish. My passion is teaching... I love children! I was born in Minnesota, but spent all of my life growing up in Washington. My dream is to become a kindergarten teacher, and inspire children to love learning! I have done little to no traveling in my lifetime outside of the United States. My goal for this blog is to keep my family, friends, and loved ones up to date on my experiences. I will be living in Guatemala for three months, Jan.-March 2014. I will be volunteering at the Opal House School near Lake Atitlan. The reason for traveling to Guatemala is to have the experience of a lifetime, and improve my Spanish! This journey will push me out of my comfort zone, and open my eyes to a whole new world. I know that I will show my love and compassion to the guatemalan people every single day, and hope that I can impact their lives as much as I know they will impact my own. You Are Looking at the New...Art, English, and Computer Teacher of Casa Opalo!

School here starts on January 20th! We have a full school/class of 21 kids, with three teachers including myself. Jackelyn is the woman from Guatemala, Diane is the woman I am living with at her home. The three of us are about to embrace this year ahead of us! This is a montessori preschool with kids ranging from ages 3-6 years old. It has been so great being able to share my ideas and suggestions with the two of them because I have experience at a Montessori school back home. The way Montessori education works is there are usually "specialists" that the students spend time with each day. This can range from language to art to library or other specific areas. Today it was decided that I am going to be the specialist of the school. I am going to be the art, English, and computer teacher for the school. I even get my own separate classroom that is attached to the school and considered an outdoor room. This room is going to need a complete transformation, and it is my job to get it ready! It is currently used for storage, extra space. An extra set of tables and chairs have been ordered. There is the perfect amount of room, and I get to enjoy the beautiful weather each day! I have a lot to do this next week to get ready for this! I will be working with small groups in each of these areas, doing all of the planning and prep for my classes! I am so much more comfortable with this plan because then I am able to work with students in small groups to get to know them individually, and I do not have to learn ALL of the hard vocab words for the Montessori materials. I have so many arts and crafts ideas, I obviously know English, and I have a wonderful spanish computer program to use with them! I am very excited about this!
