About Me

My photo
Hi, my name is Maren Talcott. I am 22 years old, and I just graduated Washington State University with a degree in Elementary Education and minor in Spanish. My passion is teaching... I love children! I was born in Minnesota, but spent all of my life growing up in Washington. My dream is to become a kindergarten teacher, and inspire children to love learning! I have done little to no traveling in my lifetime outside of the United States. My goal for this blog is to keep my family, friends, and loved ones up to date on my experiences. I will be living in Guatemala for three months, Jan.-March 2014. I will be volunteering at the Opal House School near Lake Atitlan. The reason for traveling to Guatemala is to have the experience of a lifetime, and improve my Spanish! This journey will push me out of my comfort zone, and open my eyes to a whole new world. I know that I will show my love and compassion to the guatemalan people every single day, and hope that I can impact their lives as much as I know they will impact my own. A Memory to Treasure Forever

When Best Friends Become Family

I wouldn't want to share this experience with anyone else.

This is my best friend Jessie Chansler. We started as friends, and now she is family. You can have many friends in your life, some best friends, some friends that are just for fun times, and some friends that end up turning into family. The friends that turn into family are rare and hard to come by. I was lucky to find my "sister" about thirteen years ago. She is the one person that knows me better than anyone. I wouldn't want to share this experience with anyone else. Its hard being so far away, and after over a month...this was exactly what I needed. Even though it was only for a short weekend, it was a weekend I will never forget. She is in Guatemala for 10 days with her dad to build a house in Antigua, and she was able to spend the weekend here with me! We spent all day Saturday together in Panajachel, and on the lake! It was weird being like the tour guide for her. I feel like a actually know my way around very well, and I feel so confident as I travel! It is the best feeling to know how far I have come. I used to always think that her Spanish was better than mine...but I think things have changed!! I don't want her to leave...but its time for me to get back to my journey...and it needs to be on my own.

I started this trip with my dad, I got to see my best friend half way through...AND I have news! My mom decided a couple weeks ago that she wants to come and see Opal House! She will be here my very last week. Then, we will travel back to Seattle together. It really all will come full circle. It is one thing to read my blog, and see pictures. But to actually get to share this with three very important people in my life...is just too good to be true! I feel so grateful!
